BACKGROUND
The Islamic tradition, like many other faiths, is rich with wisdom about our relationship with the environment. The Qur'anic verses tell us that there is a meaning and a purpose behind God’s creation and therefore calls upon humans to reflect upon the miracle of creation, build our inner and outer selves through nature, witness the sacredness of the natural world, and maintain the balance that has been set, and so much more. Some have estimated that as many as 750 verses in the Quran are related to nature. Many more volumes on this topic have been conveyed through the sayings of the Prophets and spiritual sages across history.
The purpose of the Green Scripture Project is to capture, organize and encourage reflection upon scripture and wisdom from the Islamic tradition related to the environment. We have selected six major aspects of nature to make the topics more comprehensive and convenient to read.
